Letters to the Editor: MUYBRIDGE FIGURE IN MOTION NUDES. "I recently sent $10 to Dover Publications in New York City and received.

a 400 page volume entitled "The Human Figure in Motion" with 4,789 photographs by Eadweard Muybridge, and almost all of these are complete nudes, many including the genitalia. I understand this book can be sold openly in book stores and meets no resistance from postal Inspectors in passing thru the U.S. mails. Many of the wrestling duals in this book are even more subject to misinterpretation that the most extreme work of most of the current physique photographer's offerings which I have seen. In view of this book, why do you feel that physique photographers dare not offer nudes?" D.V. Washington D. C.

Editor's Reply: The Muybridge book has achieved a classic status (is used in art schools thruout the world, by the Disney Studios etc.) and even the most bigoted officials dare not expose themselves as aesthetic barbarians by attempting to Interfere with its distribution. The book was first published in 1887, early work on the book being under the sponsorship of Leland Stanford of Califomia (who founded Stanford University.) The technical difficulties overcome in achieving this work, in a day long before movie or rapid sequence cameras makes the book a truly laudable undertaking and oddly enough even today with all of our modem equipment no one has attempted to duplicate the effort. By today's standards of fine grain film, long range printing papers etc, the photographic detail in the Muybridge book is so blurred as to make this volume of somewhat limited advantage to artists, and possibly this too saves legal neck. modem-day photographer who would shown the same illustrations in fine detail would probably end up with 20 years in prison.

"Are the nudes now being sold in conjunction with an art-course legal" S.U. Colorado Springs Colo. Editor's Reply: If the post office officials prove collusion between photographers and customers to circumvent postal laws, the penalty can be compounded. (Penalty is $5000.00 fine and/or 5 years in prison for each "obscene" item)
